라이스 브루잉 시스터즈 클럽, 〈공생체은하수: 궤도〉, 2023, 벽에 수성페인트, 250x1000cm

우뭇가사리를 삶아 굳히면 탱글탱글한 우무가 되고, 우무를 동결건조하면 퍼석퍼석한 한천이 된다. 우뭇가사리라는 해조류는 여러 단계의 가공 과정을 거치며 다양한 형태와 성질을 가지게 된다. 라이스 브루잉 시스터즈 클럽은 이 형질을 이용하여 한천을 공생체블록, 우무덩이, 우무피막으로 재가공했다. 모든 실험과 가공의 과정의 이면에는 나잠과 맨손어업이라는 노동이, 어촌과 산촌이, 도구와 기반시설이 존재한다. <공생체은하수: 궤도>에서는 우뭇가사리가 겪는 변화의 과정을 가로 축으로 두고, 미생물과 미소동물에서 산업의 재료로 확장하는 시점의 스케일을 세로축으로 둔다. 그리고 이를 생산하고 가공하는 기반시설을 배경으로 두어 3차원의 궤도를 만들어 낸다.

Upon being boiled and hardened, the sea plant named agar-agar (known as Gelidium amansii) turns into a gelatinous liquid called agar (umu in Korean). On the other hand, freeze-drying this viscous liquid makes it into fluffy sticks and threads also called agar (hancheon in Korean). As such, the different stages of processing agar-agar result in different properties and nomenclatures. While often flattened into a single word in English, Rice Brewing Sisters Club gives a name to agar in each stage: holobiont blocks, Agarlumps, and Agarmembranes. Also latent in these different stages are distinct systems of labor – specifically bare-handed fishery and sea diving – that interact with multiple sites, tools, and infrastructures.. Holobiont Galaxy: Orbit places the transformation of matter on the horizontal axis and scalar thinking – from the microbial to the industrial – on the vertical axis. It further places systems of infrastructure on the z-axis, turning the work into a three-dimensional orbit.
