라이스 브루잉 시스터즈 클럽은 2023년 4월 부산의 다대포와 낙동강하구에 우무덩이를 넣어 실험을 진행했다. 3주 후 꺼낸 덩이의 일부는 바다에 녹아 사라졌으며, 나머지는 요각류, 단각류, 바다대벌레 등 다양한 종의 미소동물이 함께 사는 집이 되었다. 우리는 이 집을 ‘공생체블록’이라 이름지은 후, 자연형태연구소 <동주책방>에서 현미경으로 관찰하여 어떠한 생물이 공생 관계를 이루며 살고 있는지 살펴 보았다.(자문: 이동주 박사)

Rice Brewing Sisters Club, Holobiont Galaxy: Moving Image, 2023, single-channel video, color, silent, 2min, loop

In April 2023, Rice Brewing Sisters Club submerged chunks of Agarlump in the water of Moleundae, Dadaepo and the wetlands of Nakdong Estuary in Busan. When they took them out three weeks later, some of the Agarlumps had dissolved into the sea, and the rest had become a home for various microorganisms such as meiobenthos, amphipods, and especially caprellas. After naming these lumps “holobiont blocks,” RBSC examined them under a microscope at the natural science bookstore Dong Ju’s and parsed symbiotic relationships between the newly-settled organisms.
