라이스 브루잉 시스터즈 클럽, 〈우무덩이〉, 2023, 한천, 물, 글리세린, 식용색소, 가변크기

우무덩이는 자연에서 얻은 우뭇가사리를 끓인 후 틀에 붓거나 빚어내어 만든다. 우무덩이에는 아가로스(agarose)가 다량 함유되어 있다. 이는 유기체를 배양하는 미생물배지와도 같아, 미생물과 미소동물 등 눈에 보이지 않는 다양한 생물이 함께 자라나는 집을 제공할 수 있다. 라이스 브루잉 시스터즈 클럽은 부산의 바닷속에서 우무덩이를 터전으로 함께 살아가는 생물의 연결고리를 관찰했다.

Agarlump is made by boiling agar (hancheon in Korean), derived from a sea plant named agar-agar (Gelidium amansii, or umutgasari in Korean), and then pouring it into molds or sculpting it by hand. It contains high amounts of a substance called agarose: one of the two main elements that comprise agar, agarose is a staple ingredient of microbiological growth mediums used in petri dishes. It is for this reason that Agarlump becomes a home for a variety of microscopic living beings including meiobenthos. In the spring of 2023, Rice Brewing Sisters Club dropped chunks of Agarlump into selected parts of Busan’s ocean – after collecting them, they examined the creatures that settled down and thrived in the Agarlump as their new home.
