〈공생체은하수〉

라이스 브루잉 시스터즈 클럽은 2020년부터 부산의 바다에 자생하는 해조류와 이를 둘러싼 섭생과 산업에 관해 연구해 왔다. 푸른빛 바다와 적녹색 해조류는 우리의 머릿속에 쉬이 그려지곤 한다. 그러나 바다의 약 70%를 이루고 있는 존재는 바위 표면과 틈새에 빼곡히 끼어 있는 미세조류, 선박 하부에 끈적하게 흘러내리는 바이오필름, 해초의 표면을 터전 삼아 군집을 이루는 해양 미생물이라고 할 수 있다.

눈에 보이지 않는 작은 존재인 미생물은 동식물과 인간이 소비한 자원을 분해하고 재생산하며 거대한 물질의 순환 구조를 만들어낸다. 우리는 이렇게 미생물과 긴밀히 상호작용하며, 낯설고 이질적인 존재와 함께 사는 법을 배우며, 생산과 소비, 분해 사이의 벽을 허물어 ‘개인’이 아닌 ‘공생체’가 되어가고자 한다.

Holobiont Galaxy

Since 2020, Rice Brewing Sisters Club has been researching the naturally grown algae of Busan’s seawater, as well as the orthobiosis and industry that surrounds it. Blue ocean and reddish-green algae are easy to picture in our minds. But about 70% of the ocean is made up of microalgae clinging to the rock surfaces and crevices, biofilm slick on the underside of ships, and marine microorganisms colonizing on the surface of algae. These tiny, unseen microorganisms break down and reproduce resources consumed by plants, animals, and humans, creating a vast substance circulation. By closely interacting with microorganisms, we learn to live with unfamiliar and heterogeneous beings, and by breaking down the barriers between production, consumption, and decomposition, we aim to become ‘holobionts’ instead of ‘individuals’.

〈공생체은하수〉는 해초 밀생지이자 지속가능한 재료의 생산시설이며 퇴비간이다. 이 세계는 미술관에 국한되어 있기보다 서울과 부산에 거점 공간을 두고, 아시아에서 공통의 관심사를 가지고 모인 협업자들과 교류하며 끊임없이 확장하고 있다. 관객-참여자-공생체로서 2023년 11월부터 2024년 4월까지 부산의 바다를 앞에 둔 공간(끄티 봉래)에서 우뭇가사리의 싹을 틔우고, 이를 재료로 한 ‘우무피막’과 ‘우무덩이’를 직접 생산, 미생물이 분해할 수 있는 대체재의 가능성을 고민한다. 그리고 국립현대미술관 서울관의 확장된 환경에서 우무덩이를 소비하고, 먹고 남은 것을 분해하는 법을 익히고, 우무피막이 이루는 숲을 다양한 배경의 협업자와 함께 여행하고자 한다. 이를 통해 공생에 관한 배움을 나누며 지역과 공간과 개인의 경계를 허무는 순환 체계에 직접적으로 개입한다.

Holobiont Galaxy is a seaweed colony, a production facility for sustainable materials, and a compost bin. Rather than being confined to a museum, this world is based in Seoul and Busan, and is continuously expanding by interacting with collaborators of common interests in Asia. As a visitor-participant-holobiont, from November 2023 to April 2024, the artist will sprout agar-agar(Gelidium amansii, umutgasari in Korean) at a space facing the Busan ocean (Ggti Bongnae), use it as material to directly produce ‘agarmembrane’ and ‘agarlump’, and consider the possibility of alternative materials that can be decomposed by microorganisms. Then at the extended space of MMCA Seoul, they will make and consume agarlump as pudding, learn how to decompose the leftovers, and travel through the agarmembrane forest with collaborators from various backgrounds. Through this, they will share their learnings from symbiosis, and directly intervene in the circulation system that breaks down the boundaries between regions, spaces, and individuals.

보이지 않는 존재가 중심이 되는 세계는 생산자가 분해자이고, 소비자가 분해자이기도 한 세계와도 같다. 그래서 이곳에서 쓰고 버리기 위해 벽을 세우는 것이 아닌, 경계가 생기고 없어지기를 반복하며 물질이 자유로이 투과하는 피막을 세울 수 있다고 본다. 함께 생산하고 소비한 물질을 분해하여 또 다른 생명이 자라날 수 있는 환경으로 넓혀 가는 세계를 ‘공생체은하수’라 부른다.

A world centered around unseen beings is the same as a world where producers are decomposers and consumers are also decomposers. And at this place, instead of building a wall to use and discard, as boundaries repetitively arise and disappear, a film can be built that permeates matter freely. A world in which materials produced and consumed together are decomposed and expanded into an environment where other life can grow is called the ‘holobiont galaxy’.
